‍The holidays are over, the school year is starting and YOU are flying around in panicked circles like a whirlwind.
If you have ADHD, or you are the codependent partner, or both, you will have been taking 100% responsibility for managing the family, doing 90% of the chores and holding down a full time job.Â
While everyone else switched off and relaxed, you will have been:
Â
- making your lists
- filling your calendar with dozens of deadlines
- losing sleep because you have no idea how you will afford school uniforms and stationery packs
- doing the washing and ironing and ...
swearing under your breath about how unappreciated you are.Â
Mantra 1 for 2026: You can’t, and don’t have to do it all.
 No-one loves a martyr.
As much as your offspring like being waited on hand and foot, they will not thank you when they leave home and have to take care of themselves. Â
Amazingly, those teenagers scrolling on their phones on the couch can wash dishes, prepare dinner and mow the lawn.Â
Once the children go to “big school”, they can make their beds - ok not as well as you would like, pack their school bags and help prepare their school lunches.
The pre-schoolers can pick up their toys and pack them away.
They can all carry their dirty clothes to the wash basket and cups and dishes to the kitchen and stack the dishwasher.Â
Mantra 2 for 2026:Â Done is better than perfection
It will be tough to have to “lower your standards” as they want to do chores their way or make poor choices how they spend their pocket money. Better now than when they leave home.
As an undiagnosed ADDer, who knew no better and was myself very high maintenance I found parenting extremely difficult. My friends seemed much more confident.Â
Â
I was the ultimate helicopter parent.
Â
I have since devoted the past 20 years to understanding why I needed to control everyone around me because it was too scary to look inside myself.
Â
Some habits are hard to break.
